As you’ve probably already guessed by the title…*drum roll*….I have the pleasure today of participating in the lovely Kellyn Roth’s blog tour in celebration of the publishing and re-publishing of two of her books! *throws confetti* Today I will be reviewing the first book of the series, The Chronicles of Alice and Ivy, The Dressmaker’s Secret, as well as doing a character spotlight/interview of the one and only, Alice Chattoway. Are ya ready to get into it?! First is a little bit about the author…
Kellyn Roth was born and raised in the country outside a small town in North-Eastern Oregon. Ever since she could talk, she’s had a fascination with words, always coming up with songs, poems, and stories. Now a homeschooled highschooler, she spends her spare time penning historical novels, several of which have been published.
**This is a review of the second edition of The Dressmaker’s Secret, published June 2017**
I read the second book of The Chronicles of Alice and Ivy: Ivy Introspective, a little while ago as a beta reader, so I was stoked to be able to read and review the first of this series!
First of all…THIS BOOK IS PHENOMENAL, Y’ALL. Seriously, if you enjoy historical fiction, The Dressmaker’s Secret needs to go on your to-read list RIGHT NOW! If my word isn’t enough, just fan-girl with me over this beautiful cover and read the summary!
The Dressmaker’s Secret
After a revealing conversation with the first children of her age she’s ever met, curious eight-year-old Alice Chattoway realizes that one ought to have a father … and she doesn’t. Having determined that his absence is making her mother unhappy, Alice resolves to find him and create a family for herself.
However, Alice’s mother, Miss Chattoway, is reluctant to answer any questions posed about a man she’d much rather forget. While Alice investigates, Miss Chattoway tries to balance her own spiritual turmoil with her need to be both mother and provider to her daughters.
Will Alice ever unravel her mother’s secrets? Can Miss Chattoway let go of the past to reach for the future?
Now rarely do books or movies make me emotional, but I can say differently about this book (WHY DID HAZEL…*cries* LIKE HOW CAN IT BE A GOOD OR A BAD THING?!), which was a major plus. The characters are beautifully portrayed, and if you don’t get attached to at least one of the characters, well…that’s NOT going to happen!! Trust me, you will ;P I loved the setting, and in comparison to the other historical novels I’ve read around or during this era, it was perfectly accurate. It reminded me a lot of the Elsie Dinsmore series (which is a compliment because I adore that series ;D). On top of that, the plots and twists were wonderful as well-I really can’t think of anything I disliked or thought could have been written better in this book. 5 stars, Kell!!
Are you ready to meet one of the characters?! 😀
